Outside of therapy, the miracle question may sound slightly bizarre — and yet, it is immensely powerful, exploring the individual’s hidden resources and finding solutions to persistent problems.

So what is it?

At its most simple, the miracle question asks the individual to consider an alternate reality. And, as any sci-fi fan knows, it can be enlightening.

Ask yourself, what would your world be like with your problems removed and your issues addressed. What would be different? What would it mean to you?

Reflecting on how different life might be if you woke up tomorrow without the problems you are currently spending a great deal of time worrying about can help you understand something much deeper — your needs and hopes.

In therapy, it provides an opportunity for increased dialogue between client and therapist, and yet beyond, it helps you imagine a life without constraints — your own or others.

Try it:

Imagine tonight going to sleep as you do every other night.

Unknown to you, during the night, something happens — unexplained and unexpected. You wake up tomorrow and the problem you have been worrying about has…
